Granite Falls, NC
Granite Falls was hewn by tough Scotch-Irish and Germans into a frontier town. In 1791, Andrew Baird harnessed the 35-foot falls on Gunpowder Creek for an iron works factory. After a series of names like Catawba View and Lovelady, the town was incorporated into Granite Falls.
Commerce flourished when the railroad came through in the late 1800’s. At one time the largest cordage mills in the world operated in this Caldwell County community of 4,600, just north of Hickory.
Today the town offers the new Granite Falls History and Transportation Museum and an Antique Vending Machine Museum. One of the most profitable banks in the country, The Bank of Granite, is headquartered here, as is the largest independent drug store in the state, The Granite Drug Center. The Granite Rocks made Baseball’s Hall of Fame for losing more games in one season than any professional team in history.
