Kernersville, NC
Caleb Story got a land grant in 1756. By 1771 William Dobson owned and built the inn where George Washington had breakfast on his southern tour in 1791.
In the early 1800s, immigrant Joseph Kerner ran a number of businesses at Kerner’s Crossroads, before the 1871 incorporation as Kernersville. His grandson built one of the strangest homes in America, known as Korner’s Folly. It has 22 rooms on seven levels, on three floors, many with 25’ ceilings, boasting one of the first private theatres.
The Theatre is used today, showcasing a town transforming from textiles and furniture. Dell Computer’s largest manufacturing plant is at the town’s edge. Downtown renovation includes work on the train depot, new bike paths and walkways. New Botanical gardens are being built in this town of 21,000, where President Bush visited in 2005.
