Carrboro, NC
Carborro has been called the “Paris of the Piedmont,” because of its emphasis on art, music, festivals, and culture.
This town of 17,000 was once called “West End,” indicating its position to nearby Chapel Hill. In 1911 it was incorporated as Venable in honor of a UNC President. When Julian Carr opened the cotton mill, bringing the railroad, the town was named Carrboro in 1914.
One of Carr’s restored mills became a mall, now the commercial hub of downtown. Carrboro has been cited for having one of the nation’s ten finest farmer’s markets, one of the most state’s most extensive bikeway systems, and is considered one of the nation’s top five retirement markets.
Carrboro is also known as one of the top art towns in the country with numerous galleries, and yearly poetry, art, and film festivals. Music production companies and venues abound featuring regional and national acts.
