Elkin, NC
At the confluence of the Big Elkin Creek and the Yadkin River is Elkin. Residents say it is the “Best Little Town in North Carolina.”
The natural resources of timber and water power attracted colonists in the 1700’s and saw the development of sawmills, forges and water-powered fabric mills. Incorporated as the town of Elkin in 1889, this Surry County town of 4,000 is best known for textile and furniture manufacturing. But it is also in the middle of the Yadkin Valley Wine District, the first American Viticultural Area in the state. A yearly wine festival attracts 12,000 and an annual Pumpkin Festival highlights the fall. It is the Eastern Trailhead for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.
Seven current retailers have been in business here for more than 60 years. The local High School has won the state 1-A football championship four of the past five years.
