Yanceyville, NC
Yanceyville, in the Northern Piedmont, grew slowly. Incorporated in 1830, Yanceyville’s city limits were established in a circle extending a half mile from the courthouse in all directions. The town was named for Bartlett Yancey, Jr. In 1805 Yancey enrolled at The University of North Carolina, over the strenuous objections of his mother, who was convinced that no young man who attended the university was "ever of any account afterwards." He practiced law and served with honor in both the Congress and State Senate.
When Senator John “Chicken” Stephens was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan at the Caswell County Courthouse, Governor William Holden declared a state of insurrection and suspended the writ of habeas corpus, sending in the militia. The Kirk-Holden War arrested about 100 citizens and led to the impeachment of Governor Holden.
Nationally known painter and native Maude Gatewood donated 11 acres to be turned into a park.
A town built in the round, Yanceyville is well rounded and is this week’s Carolina Community.
