Waynesville, NC
Robert Love donated 17 acres for the county seat of Haywood County and named the town of Waynesville, after his Revolutionary War commander, General “Mad Anthony” Wayne.
The last Civil War shot east of the Mississippi was fired here, but the town didn’t begin to grow until 1884 when the railroad brought tourists and shipped lumber and agricultural products.
Snuggled amid the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains and nearby Pisgah National Forest this Western Carolina town of 10,000 is noted for arts and tourism. Nearby Cold Mountain was chronicled in a best-selling book and movie. Lake Junaluska is the Southeastern Jurisdictional headquarters of the United Methodist Church. Ghost Town has recently been reopened in nearby Maggie Valley.
Each year the state’s official International Festival, FOLKMOOT, stages street dances, local theatre, handicrafts, and hospitality. The Waynesville Police were named the finest police department in the state.
