Roanoke Rapids, NC
The rapids at Roanoke Rapids once inhibited water commerce to and from the Albemarle Sound, but a nine mile canal opened navigation.
The coming of the railroad brought the demise of canal traffic, but the rapids were ideal for generating power for mills and electricity. The old powerhouse is now a museum and tourist center, featuring cultural and educational programs.
Roanoke Rapids is located on I-95, close to our Northern border and was selected the site for the Carolina Crossroads Music and Entertainment Complex. The newly opened 750 acre project features the 1,500 seat Randy Parton Theatre and, when completed, will have hotels, shops, and eateries. It is projected to provide 2,600 jobs while entertaining hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Roanoke Rapids hosts the NC State Games and 2,000 cyclists each year. A new general aviation airport is being built.
Not just a stop on I-95, Roanoke Rapids has become a gateway worthy of being named a Carolina Community.Ê
