Thomasville, NC

Thomasville is in the exact center of the state.

Senator John Thomas helped create the North Carolina Railroad, then traded two horse-drawn wagon loads of bacon for eleven hundred acres of land, where he built a store, a depot, and his home, calling it “Thomas’ Depot.” By 1852 it was Thomasville.

Here you will find the only graveyard in the world where both Confederate and Union soldiers are buried.

A 13 foot tall chair became the town’s symbol because of the sturdy, straight-back chairs made there. President Lyndon Johnson visited on a whistle stop campaign tour. Baseball players Curt Flood and Eddie Matthews played here and the Carolina Panthers’ Brad Hoover, stock car racing’s Bobby Labonte, Kyle Petty, and Brian Vickers are residents.

The furniture factory closed but active citizen involvement is leading a recovery. The state’s largest Memorial Day Parade and the Everybody’s Day festival attract large crowds.
