Southport, NC

There’s an 800 year-old Indian trial near Southport. French and Spanish explorers may have found it when they came in 1524 and built the first European boat in this country.

The pirate Stede Bonnet came to repair his boat and was captured during the Battle of the Sand Bar in 1718. Many thought Southport should be our state port, but Wilmington won out. Several marinas stay busy and a proposed NC International Port will be close by.

Southport residents and tourists enjoy a true downtown with many antique shops, art galleries, and restaurants. There’s a River walk and Yacht Basin, a River Pilot’s Tower, and views of Old Baldy and Oak Island Lighthouses. Visitors can see Civil War era Fort Johnson, and the NC Maritime Museum. The area hosts US Open King Mackerel Tournament and over 50,000 turn out for the annual July 4th celebration and parade. Several movies have filmed the beauty of Southport.
