Banner Elk, NC
When the Banner family settled in the Elk River Valley of Avery County they called it Banner’s Elk. The apostrophe and “s” were dropped when Banner Elk was incorporated in 1911.
In 1900, Edgar Tufts started a girl’s institute that was later merged with a boy’s school and become Lee’s-McRae College, a four-year liberal arts institution that provides summer theatre and cultural activities.
Once Cherokee hunting grounds, settlers were self-sufficient through farming, raising cattle and trading furs. Today they raise Christmas trees and host tourists who come for snow skiing, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, rafting, and fishing. The year-round population is 900, but it swells to thousands of tourists and summer residents.
Three ski resorts, wineries, and whitewater adventures surround this mountain community, but leaders are intent on controlling the growth and maintaining the beauty of the area. The storm water collection system is considered one of the most innovative in the east.
“Life is Just Better Here.” That’s the slogan of our Carolina Community, Banner Elk.
