Butner, NC

Butner, North Carolina’s only state-run town is now the state’s newest town.

In three months of 1942 Camp Butner went from farm land to 105 barracks, 30 mess halls, a hospital, a chapel, five movie theatres and 29 recreation buildings housing 40,000. The World War II training camp, prisoner stockade and hospital facility was named after Major General Henry Butner. In 1947 Governor William Umstead’s brother, John, helped the state buy 13,000 acres for $1 when the camp was closed at war’s end.

Since then Butner has housed hospital and training facilities for the mentally retarded and mentally ill, alcohol and drug treatment facilities, a state prison for youthful offenders, and the federal correctional institution. Many well-known personalities have inhabited the minimum security prison. When the state decided to close Dix Hospital, Butner was chosen for a modern 430 bed mental treatment hospital with 1,100 employees that will open next year.

After 60 years of state control Butner was incorporated as a town on July 27, 2007, with approximately 7,500 residents. We proudly salute Butner, the newest Carolina Community.
