Horse Shoe, NC

It didn’t take much imagination to name Horse Shoe. It was located at the horseshoe shaped bend in the French Broad River. Some thought it should be the county seat when Henderson County was formed in 1838, but others wanted a more central location. The disagreement end up in the legislature and even the State Supreme Court, but neither could resolve the argument.

There were talks that Horse Shoe could become a major transportation hub and a steamboat, the Mountain Lily, was built. The boat was too big and currents too fast to navigate the river, so it was used as a summer attraction until an accident forced the boat to be scuttled and the wood used to build the Horse Shoe Baptist Church.

 A nearby 1200 home development featuring an Arnold Palmer golf course now has folks thinking about how to control rapid growth.

An interesting name and colorful history make us lucky to have Horse Shoe as a Carolina Community.
