  Carolina Community for 9/27/07

Linville, NC

Carolina Communities Logo Linville sparkles, even in the shadows of Grandfather Mountain. The community of Linville is just two blocks long with less than 1,000 residents.

Carolina Community Linville was discovered during a railroad mapping expedition between Georgia and Maryland in the late 1800’s. When the stage coach started making twice a week trips between Blowing Rock and Linville, it became a popular summer retreat. An investment group bought 16,000 acres and built the Eseeola (E’-Cee’-oh’-la’) Lodge, with its famed chestnut bark siding.

In 1895, they built one of the first golf courses in North Carolina. Redesigned by Donald Ross, it is one of America’s 50 best courses. The famed Scottish Highland Games are held nearby and tourists enjoy exploring the nearby gorge, the falls, and caverns, as well as Grandfather Mountain.

There is a new YMCA and a new shopping center, with a restaurant, art gallery, spa, and even a cyber café.

Through it all Linville has never lost its charm and is a deserving Carolina Community.
