Cherryville, NC

Cherryville developed along trading routes connecting Washington and Charlotte in the late 1700’s, but it wasn’t until residents started planting cherry trees along the rail line in the 1860’s that the train engineer started calling the coal stop Cherryville.

Today this town of nearly six thousand celebrates each spring with the Cherry Blossom Festival. It became a major transportation center with Carolina Freight Corporation, at one time the fifth largest trucking company in the nation. A truck museum celebrates the early days of trucking.

UNC Football great Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice called Cherryville home. Folks come from all around to eat the famous “lottaburgers” you find in downtown lunch counters. Cherryville offers strong local theatre and arts programs, and champion local baseball clubs. There’s a Model Train Club Exhibit in the restored Train Depot. At the stroke of midnight the town rings in the New Year with traditional German chants and shots fired from antique muskets.
