Hillsborough, NC

Hillsborough is a small town with a big history. For over 700 years the Occoneechee Indians lived here. In 1754, White settlers laid out the town where the Indian trading path and the Eno River intersected.

Hillsborough was a colonial capital and hotbed for The Regulators, a group who opposed taxation and tyranny from the Crown The nearby Battle of Alamance, in 1771, resulted in six Regulators being hanged in Hillsborough.

William Hooper, framer and signer of the Declaration of Independence, called Hillsborough home. British General Cornwallis had headquarters here and it was the last headquarters of the Confederacy.

In 1778 delegates refused to sign the US Constitution until a Bill of Rights was added. Once a rival to Durham in the production of tobacco, Hillsborough was home to the Occoneechee Speedway, one of  two race tracks from the inaugural 1949 NSCAR season. Artists, writers, and captains of industry have lived in this Orange County seat.

Over 100 buildings from the past two centuries remain, making Hillsborough one of the United States’ dozen distinctive destinations for historic preservation and our Carolina Community.
