Red Springs, NC
What do you call a town that has red colored bubbling spring water? Red Springs. Part of a land grant from King George in 1775, the Cape Fear region was settled by Scottish Highlanders, the most famous of whom was the legendary Flora MacDonald, who rescued Bonnie Prince Charlie. Flora and her husband remained loyal to the British Crown during the Revolution and her plantation home was confiscated when she refused to swear allegiance to North Carolina.
The iron and sulfur waters were once believed to be a curative for health. Turpentine and tobacco commerce boosted the economy and the Presbyterian Church started a seminary for women, later evolving into the Flora MacDonald Academy.
A tornado devastated the town in 1984 but residents have restored and rebuilt. The annual Highland Games, named after the famous Scotswoman, attract over 5,000 each October and there are many street fairs and events.
Bubbling springs, colorful history and spirited citizens make Red Springs an ideal Carolina Community.
