Hobucken, NC

Tucked into the south end of Goose Creek Island in Pamlico County is the community of Hobucken. It started out being called Jones Bay, after the largest landowner in the region, but the postmaster saw the name Hoboken, New Jersey on a sack of potatoes, changed the spelling and changed the town name.

Today’s unincorporated fishing community was originally settled by the Secotan Indians. Timber, farming, and fishing have been the way of life here and in the early 1900’s the Intercoastal Waterway was cut through and a US Coast Guard station was established. Devastating storms drove many families inland, leaving the current population about 400.

Many surrounding acres are owned by outsiders who come to hunt the ducks. The Sultan of Swat, Babe Ruth, was once one of them. Highlights of community life have included the Blessing of the Fleet and the annual homecoming play.

A quiet community still enjoying the peaceful life and life on the water is Hobucken, this week’s Carolina Community.
