Glendale Springs, NC

The owner of the mill and nearby Inn made up the name Glendale Springs, hoping it would promote development. On milepost 259 of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Ashe County, the Glendale Springs Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places. President Clinton and Vice President Gore lunched there when they declared the oldest river in the world, the New River, as a heritage river.

The Episcopalians started St. Mary’s church in the late 1800’s. Artist Ben Long stated that there was a great expectancy about the church. Someone jokingly suggested that he paint a picture of the “expecting” Virgin Mary. Much to their surprise, Long painted one of three frescoes in the church, creating quite a stir. Visitors flock to the frescoes of the expecting Mary, John the Baptist, and the mystery of faith. Noted artist Florence Thomas gave ten acres of nearby land to establish a new school for artists.

A former stagecoach stop in the Blue Ridge Mountains remains Glendale Springs is a relaxing respite for travelers and our Carolina Community.
