Pinehurst, NC

Pinehurst started out being called Tuftstown. James Tufts bought 5,000 acres for one dollar per acre in 1895 from Walter Page. Page told friends, "as much as I dislike Yankees, it is inexcusable to have gouged them this way."

Frederick Law Olmstead, noted landscape architect of the U.S. Capitol grounds was hired to lay out a play for a village and Donald Ross from Scotland's St. Andrews course came to maintain and improve the golf courses. With Tufts and Ross Pinehurst became the home of American golf.

The North-South Amateur championship has been played every year since 1901. Pinehurst has also hosted the U.S. Open and the U.S. Women's Open. There are now some 44 golf courses nearby.

Since the early days Pinehurst has attracted both the rich and famous as well as folks like you and me to play golf, tennis, enjoy horses, fish and hunt, and just relax in the beautiful setting. It has a growing retirement population among the 10,000 residents.
