Icard, NC

Perhaps you have seen the signs for the community of I-C-A-R-D on I-40 near Morganton and wondered about it. Icard was named after a German immigrant who bought land in the rolling foothills of what is now eastern Burke County in the early 1700’s. Peter Icard was a member of the Committee for Safety prior to the American Revolution.

The Western North Carolina Railroad once named two different stops Icard in the 1800’s and several cotton, cord, and hosiery mills developed. A Waldensian winery was once the largest in our state utilizing the native muscadine grapes. Current Senator Jim Jacumin started JEMCO, a company that built machines for the textile industry. Now  the winery and the industry is gone but newcomers are moving here for the rural lifestyle and commute to work in Hickory or Morganton.

We hope Icard is no longer just a sign on the Interstate but another wonderful Carolina Community.
