Calabash, NC

Mention Calabash and people immediately recognize this town along our southern border as the Seafood Capital of the World.

In 1691 King Charles gave a grant of 48,000 acres to Landgrave Thomas Smith. In 1812 Hickory Hall plantation was built and was used as a Union hospital in the Civil War.

In the early 1930’s fishermen roasted oysters at an old country store and the reputation for good food and hospitality soon spread far and near. Entertainer Jimmy Durante and his band stopped off at Carolyn Coleman’s restaurant one night in the 1940’s. They loved the seafood so much “the schnozzola” promised to make her famous. From that point on Durante always closed his show by saying, “Good night Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.”

Today there are eight restaurants serving the southern fried seafood specialty to folks from nearby Myrtle Beach and North Carolina’s southern beaches.

Instead of good night thousands of hungry folks say hello each year to our Carolina Community, Calabash.
