  Carolina Community for 10/16/08

Wallace, NC

Carolina Communities LogoWallace has an interesting history. In the 1730’s an interesting mix of Welsh, Scottish, Swiss and German Palatine, French Hugenots, and British settlers settled in a region named after Lord Duplin. Colonel Thomas Kenan lost a battle to British General Cornwallis near here on his way to Virginia.

WallaceWhen they ran the Wilmington and Weldon railroad through the county new markets for commerce were opened and Wallace thrived. The old depot soon will become home to the Chamber of Commerce, an Art Guild for local artists, and a railroad museum. The old stockyard is now the farmers’ market, open every Thursday, filled with vendors selling antiques, produce, fruit, seafood, and homemade treats.

Wallace is the largest community in the County. This small town of just over 3,000 was home to New York Giants Pitcher Hank Boney and NBA player M.L. Carr who played for both the Detroit Pistons and the Boston Celtics.

Dedication to restore its rich past and maintain its simplicity, make Wallace an extraordinary Carolina Community.
