Fremont, NC

Fremont was originally called Nahunta, probably because of the creek nearby. The railroad came through in 1840 and lumber and turpentine were exported. In 1869 the town was renamed after Colonel S.L. Fremont, superintendent of the Wilmington and Weldon Raleigh and also the man charged with building coastal defenses for our state in the Civil War.

Charles Brantly Aycock, the youngest of ten children and attended Nahunta Academy before university. Known as a champion for public education, Aycock built over 1100 schools in his four years and his birthplace is now open to show turn of the century life.

Because of the many daffodils gardens in Fremont the town became known as the Daffodil Town and every year they celebrate the coming of spring with a festival that attracts thousands and includes crafts, exhibits, plenty of barbecue and the Embers.

Located in Wayne County is the town of Fremont, home to about 1,500 and this week’s Carolina Community.
