Oxford, NC

Following the Tuscarora War settlers migrated to present-day Oxford for abundant game and rich soil. Samuel Benton built Oxford Plantation and in 1764, the legislature designated the area the Granville county seat. Neighbor John Penn was one of North Carolina’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Granville was one of only five counties to have 10,000 slaves and plantations abounded. The sandy soil was ideal for growing bright leaf tobacco. During World War II the government took acreage for Camp Butner. The first Masonic Orphanage for Children in the U.S. was founded in 1873. Oxford is home to the largest roofing plant, the largest tire retreading plant, the second largest zipper plant and the largest cosmetic production site in the world, as well as Central Regional Mental Hospital and Camp Butner federal prison, home to Bernie Madoff. Tim Tyson’s bestseller “Blood Done Sign My Name,” told about 1970’s racial turmoil. Famous natives include Ben Chavis, pitcher “Specs” Meadows, Treasurer Richard Moore and Legislator Jim Crawford.

Oxford was once called one of the prettiest towns in the nation. It remains an ideal Carolina Community.
