Fuel is cheaper, but traffic is heavier

The good news about traveling this holiday weekend is that the price of gasoline is about 70 cents less per gallon than it was a year ago, and drivers won’t have to negotiate as much road construction.

The bad news?

Well, there are going to be more people on the road this year than there were in 2014 – more than 1.35 million North Carolinians traveling 50 miles or more during the holiday weekend, according to the AAA Carolinas.

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in North Carolina is $2.07. A year ago, it was $2.77.

The N.C. Department of Transportation will suspend most road construction on major routes across the state to keep traffic moving as efficiently as possible. But as anyone who has traveled on a holiday weekend knows, interstates and highways in North Carolina still draw plenty of travelers.

Allow yourself some extra time to reach Grandma’s house. Minimize the number of distractions inside your vehicle. Watch your speed and drive defensively.

Have a wonderful holiday –however you choose to spend it.
