N.C. A&T State University can claim the top spot as the largest historically black college and university in the country, passing Florida A&M and up from the No. 2 spot last year.

The News & Record of Greensboro reportsthat unofficial fall enrollment numbers at A&T of 10,734 place it ahead of Howard University (10,500) and Florida A&M (10,231).

The newspaper reports that A&T's rise to the top is thanks in part to the fall of Florida A&M, which had close to 13,300 in 2010, but has seen enrollment fall as tuition rose and the university faced fallout from the hazing death of an A&M band member in 2011.

A&T has set an enrollment goal of 13,500 students by 2020.
