NC passes 10 million population, 9th largest state

More people will be celebrating the holidays this year as North Carolinians than ever before.  The U.S. Census came out this week naming the Old North State as the ninth most populous in the nation, passing the 10 million mark as of July 2015.

“People are attracted to places that are growing and vibrant,” said House Majority Leader Mike Hager (R-Rutherford). “The nation and the world recognize that North Carolina has put the right policies in place over the past few years to promote economic growth and they want to be a part of it.”

An average of 281 people moved to North Carolina each day last year, with the largest growth in the Raleigh and Charlotte metro areas.  Just five years ago North Carolina had one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, sending many people for the borders.  Now, a combination of the state’s economic turnaround, quality of life and climate has more people putting down roots in North Carolina soil and enjoying the prosperity and beauty of the state.

“I suggest this growth is the recognition that North Carolina is the ultimate combination of great political leadership, work ethic, educational excellence, natural beauty and quality of life.  We are truly blessed,” said N.C. Commerce Secretary John Skvarla.

Overall, the census reported that the United States grew slightly faster in 2015 than in recent years, up .79 percent with 321.4 million people.  California, Texas and Florida took the first, second and third spots for population.  North Dakota ranked the fastest growing state for the fourth year in a row.
