Martin Lancaster

Martin LancasterMartin Lancaster was born and raised on a tobacco farm near Pikeville, in rural Eastern Carolina. Graduating from UNC and UNC Law School, Martin served in the US Navy during the Viet Nam era. He presented Wayne County in the North Carolina House and served eight years in Congress and was especially effective on the Armed Services Committee.. In 1997, Martin Lancaster was chosen President of the North Carolina Community College System. He is credited with championing the vision and providing leadership at a critical time in the history of community colleges, helping build greater support and increased funding from the General Assembly. Lancaster helped to successfully push a $600 million Higher Education Bond Referendum to help the 58 colleges in the system build new facilities. In 2003 he was elected Chair of the National Council of the National Council of State Directors of Community Colleges. Martin Lancaster has come to epitomize service to his region and state and we are proud to recognize him as this week‚s NC Notable.
