| NC Notable for 4/28/05 |
Annie Louise Wilkerson
When Dr. Annie Louise Wilkerson was born in Apex in 1914 there were only 250 people in the town. Her dad was bank president, owned the drugstore, and practiced medicine. When Annie Louise indicated an interest in medicine, her family and especially her father discouraged her. Graduating from the Medical College of Virginia, Dr. Wilkerson was Raleigh’s first woman OB/GYN and Rex Hospital’s first intern/resident. Dr. Annie has delivered 8,000 babies. She never married, but said if she had to do it all over again she would still become a doctor. There are at least 8,000 reasons why Dr. Annie Louise Wilkerson, now retired, is this week’s NC Notable.
