Dr. Orrin H. Pilkey

Dr. Orrin H. PilkeyNo other individual knows more about North Carolina's coast and barrier islands than Dr. Orrin Pilkey. Orrin grew up in Washington state and received his undergraduate degree from Washington State, with a Masters from Montana State and Doctorate in geology from Florida State University. Since 1965 he has been a professor at Duke and has devoted his life and work to conservation and protection of North Carolina's coast. No one has been a more vocal advocate or passionate about protecting our coast and wetlands than Orrin Pilkey. Dr. Pilkey is constantly sought out for lectures, interviews and articles. He has an exhaustive list of publications and has been awarded the Francis Shepard medal for excellence in marine geology and the NC Wildlife Federation Conservation educator of the year. For his lifetime of achievement in environmental and conservation advocacy for our coasts, Dr. Orrin H. Pilkey is this week's NC Notable.
