| NC Notable for 6/16/05 |
Jim Martin
A native of Savannah, Georgia, Jim Martin came to Davidson College and found a home. He received his doctorate in Chemistry from Princeton, then came back to Davidson as a member of the chemistry faculty. But public service called him and he ran for and was elected a Mecklenburg County Commissioner, then for 11 years served in Congress. In 1984 he was convinced the time was ripe and he ran for and was elected Governor of North Carolina, the second Republican in this century. During his second term the state economy hit the skids and Martin took the leadership in righting the state budget decisively and quickly. Jim Martin currently serves as Vice President of the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and on many boards and commissions. His administration, and especially Jim and his gracious wife Dotty, never received the credit they deserved and we are proud to recognize James Grubb Martin as this week's NC Notable.
