| NC Notable for 7/14/05 |
Lee Smith
Nationally recognized writer Lee Smith has transform the voices and visions of the South into the perfect American novels. So far Smith has penned 10 novels and is not finished telling her tales of the South and its people. Her break out novel, Oral History, won the Sir Walter Raleigh Award in 1983. A writer since she was a young girl growing up in the inspirational Appalachian Mountains, Smith says writing her stories is like breathing; it is something that she just has to do. Living in North Carolina for the last 31 years, Smith has taught her special brand of creative writing at UNC-CH, Duke, and NC State. She is professor emerita of English and writer-in-residence at NC State. Smith is not content to just write, she is committed to teaching and developing other in the craft. Lee Smith lives and writes in Chapel Hill. For her contribution to American literature we recognize Lee Smith at this week's NC Notable.
