Billy Graham

Billy GrahamPerhaps no North Carolinian has had a greater impact in the world then this week's NC Notable, Billy Graham. Born on a dairy farm in Charlotte, he was ordained in 1939 by the Southern Baptist Convention. In 1943 he graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois and married Ruth McCue Bell.

Today, at 86, Billy Graham is known around the globe. From remote African villages to his recent final New York crusade Graham has preached the Gospel to over 210 million people in the past six decades. Billy has been a friend and confidant to every U.S. president since Dwight Eisenhower.

Now retired in Montreat, his legacy continues with son Franklin, founder of Samaritan's Purse in Boone and daughter Ann Graham Lotz, a prominent evangelist in Raleigh. With his distinctive style using strong, clear language, Graham's voice and image are instantly recognized. Billy Graham is unquestionably the most influential and faithful preacher of our age and we proudly recognize him as this week's NC Notable.
