Martha Guy

Martha GuyMartha Guy never set out to be a legend in banking. While seeking a Master's degree in chemistry from UNC, World War II dictated her return to help keep open her family-owned bank in Avery County. Martha says she didn't even like banking the first thee years but she met so many nice people she decided to stay. Over the next sixty years she led the Avery County Bank to being one of the most efficient and profitable banks in its asset class, earning her a Legends in Banking Award from the North Carolina Bankers Association. The Martha Guy Laboratories at UNC were named in her honor, as was the Martha Guy Summer Institute for Future Business Leaders at nearby Appalachian State University. An unlikely and untimely interruption of her studies provided Martha Guy with a vehicle to make an invaluable contribution to her region and state. We are proud to recognize Martha Guy as this week’s NC Notable.
