Julius Chambers

Julius ChambersOne of North Carolina's giants is also one of its most humble citizens. Julius Chambers was born in Mount Gilead, witnessing racial intolerance first-hand. He went to NC Central University, graduating summa cum laude and was elected president of the student body. At UNC Law School Chambers was the first African American editor of the law review, graduating number one in a class of 100. In June 1963, Chambers started the first integrated law practice in the state in Charlotte. In 1984, he left his law firm to become director-counsel of the Legal Defense Fund of the NAACP. In 1993, Julius Chambers came back to become Chancellor of his alma mater, NCCU, at a time when finances were questioned and the school desperately needed leadership. His eight-year tenure is marked with great gains for NC Central and he retired in 2001 to return to private practice in Charlotte. Julius Chambers is unequaled in the area of civil rights, education, and public sector leadership. We proudly recognize him as this week's NC Notable.

We have enough money to do a mediocre job of training our teens to drive but not enough to do it right.
