Fred Barber

Fred BarberFred Barber is a North Carolina native who graduated from High Point College and went into journalism, first in newspapers and then in TV. Barber moved into management, first as news director, then as manager of TV stations in Washington, Atlanta, Pittsburg, Indianapolis and Raleigh. When he retired in 1998 as senior Vice President for Broadcasting of Capitol Broadcasting he had made an enviable mark in journalism and broadcasting, but he perhaps made a bigger contribution in service to others. His work focused on mental health, substance abuse, affordable housing, and the homeless. He was co-founder and founding board chairman of The Healing Place in Raleigh, a highly successful residential treatment facility for alcohol and substance abuse. Fred has been awarded the William Booth Award by both the Pittsburg and Raleigh chapters of the Salvation Army. For his contributions to broadcasting and those in need we are proud to recognize Fred Barber as this week's NC Notable.

Publisher's note: If you watch NC SPIN you have Fred Barber to thank. When we first conceived the idea of the show Fred championed it, mentored it, and has cheered it. He continues as friend and advisor even after his retirement.
