  NC Notable for 9/01/05

Lois Britt

Lois BrittLois Britt devoted her life to agriculture, education, and service. If you moved at all in agribusiness circles in North Carolina you knew Lois Britt. Lois got a BS in Home Economics from East Carolina and a Masters in Adult Education from State. For 34 years she worked in the Cooperative Extension Service and was the first woman to serve as County Extension Director. She served on the national Pork Producers Board, the UNC Board of Governors, the Rural Economic Development Center Board, and was past president of the NC Agribusiness Council. She always did her homework, knew the issues, and was action oriented. Accolades were many for Lois including the 4-H Lifetime Achievement Award, the NC Pork Council Hall of Fame, and the Watauga Medal. But perhaps the biggest tribute came posthumously. Lois died suddenly in June 2005 and her funeral service attracted one of the largest crowds as any in Duplin County history. Lois Britt is truly worthy of recognition as an NC Notable.
