| NC Notable for 9/08/05 |
Eva Clayton
Former Congresswoman Eva Clayton is a native of Savannah, Georgia. She graduated from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte and received a Masters from NC Central University. She moved to Warrenton in the 1960's and became active in civil rights issues. In the 1970's she was one of the founders of Soul City, a federally funded project to build a model town. After stints working for UNC and as an Assistant Secretary for the Department of Natural Resources she became active in politics, serving for 10 years as a Warren County Commissioner and was chair of that board for 8 years, earning her recognition as the Outstanding NC County Commissioner of the Year. When First District Congressman Walter B. Jones died in office Clayton was named to fill his unexpired term and was elected to a full term in 1992. She was the first woman to serve in Congress from our state and the first African American elected since 1898, retiring in 2002. A lifetime of active service warrants naming Eva Clayton as this week's NC Notable.
