  NC Notable for 10/6/05

Kay Yow

Kay Yow Competitive, fierce and loving. These three words can be used to describe NC State Women’s Basketball coach Kay Yow, this week’s NC Notable. A Gibsonville native, Yow rose to command national and international respect during her 35-year career. She was the first female to head a women’s basketball team in North Carolina. Since joining the Wolfpack in 1975, this Hall of Famer guided NC State to five ACC Championships, four ACC Tournament Championships, and has coached two Olympic gold medal and two World Championship teams. Yow became the first ACC women’s coach during the 2004-05 season to coach 900 games and win 600 at the same school. Her 617 victories make her the winningest coach in NC State’s history. But Kay Yow is more than basketball. She received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Lineberger Cancer Research Center and the Woman of Today Award from the Girl Scouts of America. This eight time national coach of the year speaks to thousands each year motivating them to be their best. Kay Yow’s grace and determination on and off the court make her an NC Notable.
