  NC Notable for 10/20/05

Jim Broyhill

Jim BroyhillPublic service was more than a campaign promise for Jim Broyhill, this week's NC Notable. Stories abound in the Carolina Foothills about the Republican Congressman from what was then the 8th District. He was a political giant who knew the names and inquired about the families of the ordinary people who kept him in Congress from 1962 to 1986.

Broyhill became an elder statesman in North Carolina after his political career ended. He nurtured North Carolina's business climate, first as chairman of the NC Economic Development Board and later as Secretary of the state Commerce Department.

Broyhill served on the board of the NC Food Bank and was a member of the state's welfare to work committee. A champion of higher education, he served on the boards of Appalachian State University and the Babcok MBA School of Management at Wake Forest University. Broyhill used his stature to campaign for higher education bonds in 1993 and 2000.

Broyhill was inducted in 1993 in the NC Republican Hall of Fame. He retired to Winston-Salem, but remains active in Republican politics. His ability to be rather than to seem makes him an NC Notable.
