  NC Notable for 10/27/05

Mike Krzyzewski

Mike KrzyzewskiCoach Mike Krzyzewski's heart has taken him from Chicago to Duke, with a few stops in between.

Krzyzewski built a powerhouse dynasty in the 25 years he led Duke University's Men's Basketball. The Hall of Famer's stats are impressive: 700 wins, three national championships, 10 Final Four appearances, and named "National Coach of the Year" 12 times in eight different seasons. Just Wednesday, it was announced that Coach K accepted the job to lead Team USA, which will compete in the 2008 Olympics.

But Coach K is more than hoops. His commitment to friendship, community service and family are the bedrock of his success. He identifies, nurtures and prepares future community leaders to achieve excellence through the Emily Kryzewski Family Life Center.

Kryzewski is also active in several service organizations, including: the Children's Miracle Network, the V Foundation, Comprehensive Cancer Center, CEO Roundtable on Cancer, and the NABC Coaches vs. Cancer. He was the first recipient in 2000 of the Verizon Reads with the NABC Literacy Award.

Coach K's belief that "people have to be given the freedom to show the heart they possess" and his willingness to play with heart at everything he does make him an NC Notable.
