John Hope Franklin

John Hope FranklinThis week's NC Notable holds up a "mirror to America".

Descended from slaves, John Hope Franklin was born in 1915 in Oklahoma. The first sting of racism came at the age of 6 when he was thrown off a train for sitting in the "whites only" section.

Franklin's answer to the invisibility racism demands was to become even more visible as the country's premier historian.

He was trained at Fisk and Harvard universities. His teaching career spans nearly seven decades, with stints at St. Augustine's College, North Carolina College and now Duke University, where he has served as the James B. Duke Professor of History since 1982.

Franklin served on several committees for presidents ranging from Franklin Roosevelt to Bill Clinton. He published several seminal works on African-American history and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 for his work in civil rights.

His philanthropic work includes serving on the board of the Alzheimer's Association, the Duke Library Board, the NC Museum of History Associates, and the NC Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. An African-American library at Duke University bears his name.

Franklin's dedication to scholarship as a means to promote the humanity of all people makes him an NC Notable.
