Molly Corbett Broad
This week's NC Notable is Molly Corbett Broad, the first woman and first non-native to head the 16-campus university system.
Molly grew up in Pennsylvania, the daughter of two public school teachers, and earned an undergraduate and a master's degree from Syracuse and Ohio State universities respectively. The economist rose through the ranks of administrative posts in various university systems including those in California, Arizona, and Syracuse University before coming to North Carolina in 1997.
Broad led the UNC system during a time of unprecedented growth. She used technology to advance education and shepherded the $3.1 billion higher education bond referendum. Both tactics left the university system poised to take advantage of the enrollment and high-tech booms.
Broad often clashed with state lawmakers and others over tuition increases, expanding bureaucracy, and other controversial issues. But Broad steadied her ship in the face of such obstacles. She retires from the university system at the end of the month.
Active in a number of organizations, Broad is considered an expert on strategic planning for higher education, emerging technologies and public school partnerships.
Her steady leadership and clear vision during rough times makes her an NC Notable.
