Erskine Bowles

Erskine BowlesThis week's NC Notable is UNC President Erskine Bowles.

Politics and public service loom large in Bowles' life like his trademark wire-rimmed glasses. The second of four children born to Jessamine and Hargrove "Skipper" Bowles, the Greensboro native earned degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill and Columbia University Business School. He learned politics and public service from his father.

Erskine earned millions as an investment banker, but a golf course friendship with Bill Clinton led him to head of the Small Business Administration, then to be Clinton’s chief of staff. In this role he earned high marks from all.

Clinton's shadow dogged Bowles during two unsuccessful bids for a U.S. Senate seat, but his destiny might have been fulfilled when he became the President of North Carolina’s 16 campus university system. Erskine created an ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease) Center in Charlotte and has served as the international president of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, two causes that have affected his family. The UN dispatched him as special deputy envoy to the tsunami-struck countries.

Bowles' dogged determination to public service makes him this week's NC Notable.
