Jim Goodnight
 This week's NC Notable is Jim Goodnight, co-founder of perhaps the largest privately owned software company in the world. The Wilmington native and son of a hardware store owner started SAS Institute in 1976. SAS sells analytic software and boasted $1.5 billion in revenue in 2004. Frequently listed as one of the best places in America to work, the company provides a fitness center, athletic fields, a medical clinic and daycare center for its thousands of workers.
Goodnight and his wife Ann established the Cary Academy in 1996, insisting that technology needed to be integrated into all facets of education. One of the wealthiest people in our state, Jim and Ann quietly but significantly assist many worthy causes and encourage their employees to give also. SAS employees donate their time and money through the company's volunteer program. He also endowed several professorships at his alma mater, NC State University.
Jim Goodnight's use of technology to improve the quality of life for generations of North Carolinians makes him an NC Notable.
