  NC Notable for 03/02/06

John Davis

John DavisIf state politics had a Ten Commandments, then this week’s NC Notable, John Davis, is surely our Moses. Davis heads NC FREE, the most knowledgeable source for legislative elections in our state. Davis is the editor and analyst of the Almanac of North Carolina politics, a collection of key statistics during each election cycle. It's considered the "good book" for political junkies.

Davis grew up in Graceville, Florida. He describes the town as the "Eastern North Carolina" of the panhandle. He majored in theater at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Davis has helped business leaders in 24 states create political research and education organizations like NC FREE. Davis's insights into North Carolina's changing political character led him to predict the winner in 566 of 591 campaigns.

"The thing that's so fascinating is how truly different North Carolina is from the rest of the south," Davis says. "It's such a dynamic state. That's what makes it fun."

Davis's enthusiasm, insight and dedication make him this week's NC Notable.
