Maceo Sloan
 When only a teenager at a Durham junior high, Maceo Sloan started investing his money. Sloan’s part-time passion created a financial services empire with current assets in excess of five billion dollars.
This near-legendary businessman is a descendent of the founders of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company of Durham. A decade ago Sloan pushed the company toward financial services. Today those skills rank Sloan as among the top 500 investment managers worldwide.
Sloan says simplicity in approach to business and people created his success. He believes that when “opportunity meets preparation” anything is possible, delivering that message to high school and college students. Sloan’s comm itments extend to past presidencies of many local and national non-profit organizations. This includes the Rainbow/PUSH Wall Street Project that engages African Americans to pursue economic and political success.
For his straightforwardness, his desire for true, and for his tenacious elevation of minority causes, we choose Maceo Sloan as this week’s NC Notable.
