  NC Notable for 05/04/06

William Barber

William BarberThis week’s NC Notable grew up in a home where politics and civil rights were passionate topics. The Reverend Doctor William J. Barber, II continues to connect social justice and the Gospel as President of the state’s NAACP. His public policy training and eloquence elevated him last year to the post where he hopes to erect a “clear, concise, courageous civil rights agenda.”

Barber graduated from NC Central University and received a Masters of Divinity from Duke and Doctorate from Drew University. He is active in trying to rectify the low-performance and rapid re-segregation of schools, especially those in Goldsboro where he pastors Greenleaf Christian Church.

This pastor-scholar has served on the NC Human Relations Commission and National Community Economic Development Board. He and his wife Rebecca have five children and are surrogate parents for many others in their community.

For his advocacy of human rights and equality we salute the Reverend Doctor William Barber, II as this week’s NC Notable.
