Howard Lee
This week’s NC Notable spent a lifetime breaking down barriers and building up students.
As a professor at UNC-Chapel Hill he focused on problems of teaching disadvantaged children at the school of Social work. In 1969 Lee was elected as Chapel Hill’s first black mayor, in fact the first African American mayor elected in a mostly white southern town since Reconstruction. After a failed bid for Lt. Governor, Lee was appointed to a cabinet-level post under Governor Jim Hunt.
For 13 years Lee headed powerful in the State Senate, always fighting for education reforms.. In 2003 he was named to chair the State Board of Education. All the while, Lee ran five successful businesses and enjoyed life with his wife Lillian and three children. Lee says he’s most engaged when helping schools motivate students through technology and creativity.
His life long commitment to public service and to children’s future makes Howard Lee this week’s NC Notable.
