  NC Notable for 06/01/06

Robert Burren Morgan

Robert Burren MorganFrom a little boy in overalls to a US Senator, Harnett County’s Robert Morgan has remained honest, humble, and an advocate for the common good.

Starting as Clerk of Court in 1950, Morgan went on to become a State Senator and State Attorney General. As the “people’s attorney” Morgan upgraded the State Bureau of Investigation, created drug abuse programs, and was first to take on consumer protection in the US.

Morgan won a US Senate seat serving on many Committees including Business and Intelligence.

The Panama Canal, medical problems and an aggressive Republican challenger halted Morgan’s political career, but he remained a successful trial lawyer, later heading the State Bureau of Investigation.

Morgan served as chairman of the board of East Carolina University and joined president Leo Jenkins in a tough campaign victory for a medical school for ECU. Near 80 he’s now “semi-retired” from law in Lillington.

For his consistent public service and unquestioned integrity, Senator Robert Morgan is this week’s NC Notable.
